POMOĆ ZA OBNOVU NAŠEG SAMOSTANA SVETOG IVANA TROGIRSKOG I CRKVE POSVEĆENE SVETOM OCU BENEDIKTU U HRVATSKOJ:
DRAGA BRAĆO I SESTRE U GOSPODINU,
Sada smo momentalno trojica subraće, a očekujemo još četiri "zainteresirana kandidata". Zajednica raste, DEO GRATIAS !!!
Bog vas blagoslovio! +
Vaš u Kristu i BDM,
The Confraternity of the Holy Apostles
was envisioned in 2013 as a way to promote and encourage ecumenism among Christians descended from Apostolic churches. Because of errors of history and disagreements, Christians have been divided to the present times.
The words of His Holiness Pope John Paul II provided insight into the need for the Confraternity. “Restoration of unity among Christians is one of the main concerns of the Church… and this task is for all of us. No one can claim exemption from this responsibility. Indeed, everybody can make some contribution, however small it may seem, and all are called to that interior conversion which is the essential condition for ecumenism.” Also invoked are the words of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople: “Our faith is not a compilation of diverse opinions promulgated to integrate discussion in a harmonious way; it is the revelation of the singular truth expressed through and in the divine person of Jesus Christ.”
All Christians, both lay and clergy, who meet all the below eligibility guidelines are invited to join the Confraternity. It should be noted that there is no screening process for joining the Confraternity, and that the Confraternity assumes no liability for any of its members.
1. Belief in the Nicene Creed (with or without the filioque).
2. Active participation in a local faith community.
3. Belonging to a Church holding apostolic succession and belief in the Real Presence.
Membership is free. However, members may wish to purchase a membership packet below that includes a medal, membership certificate, and prayer for Christian unity.
Members commit to the following:
1. Weekly praying the prayer for Christian unity:
Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst unto Thine Apostles: Peace I leave you, My peace I give to you; regard not our sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and grant unto her that peace and unity which are agreeable to Thy Will; Who livest and reignest ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
2. Promotion, where possible, of Christian unity among the Apostolic Churches.
Benefits of Membership
Members are especially remembered at Holy Mass during the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul. Members may also contact each other for local fraternity and fellowship.
upisati tiskanim slovima svoje ime i prezime, matični broj građana i
staviti svoj potpis.
Pope Francis has called on Catholics worldwide to join in prayer with their fellow Catholics in China on May 24, to ask God to give them the grace “to announce with humility and joy” Jesus Christ, to be faithful” to his Church and to the Pope, and to live their lives in service to their country in a way that is coherent with their Christian faith.
Speaking for the first time publicly on the Church in China on May 22, at the end of the public audience in St Peter’s Square attended by some 100,000 people, Pope Francis chose his words carefully and simply called for prayer for the more than 12 million Catholics in China, who are still divided in two communities as a result of policies pursued by the Chinese Government.
He began by recalling that next Friday, May 24, is “a day dedicated to the liturgical memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, who is venerated with great devotion at the sanctuary of Sheshan in Shanghai”, and then said:
“I invite all the Catholics of the world to join in prayer with their brothers and sisters who are in China to implore from God the grace to announce with humility and joy Christ who died and is risen, to be faithful to his Church and to the Successor of Peter, and to live their daily lives in service to their country and to their fellow citizens in a way that is coherent with the faith they profess.
“Making our own some words of a prayer to Our Lady at Shesan”, he said, “together with you I would like to invoke Mary in this way:
“Our Lady of Sheshan, sustain all those in China, who, amid their daily trials, continue to believe, to hope, to love, so that they may never be afraid to speak of Jesus to the world, and of the world to Jesus.”
“Mary, Virgin most faithful, support Chinese Catholics, render their commitments, which are not easy, more and more precious in the eyes of the Lord, and nurture the affection and the participation of the Church in China in the journey of the Universal Church”.
His predecessor, Benedict XVI, in his historic 2007 Letter to Catholics in China, decreed that May 24 be kept worldwide as “a day of prayer for the Church in China”. He also composed a prayer for the occasion and Pope Francis used part of that prayer in his prayer today.
The Jesuit Pope is well aware of the history of the Catholic Church in China and the delicate situation it is in today. He is keen to do whatever he can to help it reach a situation of normality such as is enjoyed by the Church in most other countries of the world.
Indeed he is constantly reminded of the Church in China by the small bronze statue of Our Lady of Sheshan that is standing in his room in the Vatican guesthouse of Santa Marta where he now lives. It was given to him in the Sistine Chapel immediately after his election as pope on March 13, by Hong Kong’s Cardinal John Tong.
On that occasion, the cardinal told him, “The Catholics in China love you and will pray for you. Also, we ask for your care for all Chinese Catholics, and please pray for us!” Pope Francis responded by recalling that “Chinese Catholics have given many testimonies to the Universal Church” and, he revealed, “I never forget to pray for Chinese Catholics”. Some days later, he confided to the cardinal, “The Church in China is in my heart”.
Štuju ga i danas.
Was einer vergewaltigten Frau widerfahre, sei sehr schlimm.
“The Church in China is in my heart”, Pope Francis told Cardinal John Tong Hon after his election. And he assured him that he “never forgets to pray for Chinese Catholics” who “have given many testimonies to the universal Church.”
Cardinal Tong, the only Chinese cardinal to have participated in the recent conclave, talked with the new pope on a number of occasions in the days following his election. He revealed what the Pope said to him in those encounters, when he spoke during a solemn mass in Hong Kong’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on April 8 to celebrate the inauguration of the Petrine ministry of Pope Francis. encounters.
The Chinese cardinal resided in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, the Vatican guesthouse where all the cardinals stayed during the conclave, from March 12, when the conclave began. He remained there until March 20, when he departed for Hong Kong, where he is bishop.
Pope Francis too resided in that same guesthouse and has actually decided to continue living there, instead of moving to the papal apartment on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace, because he wants to be near the people. As a result, he and the cardinal met several times in the days following his election.
In his homily in Hong Kong Cathedral, Cardinal Tong recalled how after his election as pope in the Sistine Chapel on March 13, at about 7 pm, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio took the name Francis. Then, after putting on his white cassock, “he first went to embrace Cardinal Ivan Dias who had difficulty in walking.” Tong noted how “the new Holy Father really cares for everybody, particularly the weak.”
Then, he said, Pope Francis “accepted the congratulations and loud applause of the cardinals” and then “one by one, we extended our personal greetings and embraces of love to him.”
When it came to his turn, Tong presented the new Pope with “a small bronze Chinese statue of Our Lady of Sheshan” and told him, “The Catholics in China love you and will pray for you. Also, we ask for your care for all Chinese Catholics, and please pray for us!”
Pope Francis smiled and responded, “Chinese Catholics have given many testimonies to the Universal Church”. Then to Tong’s surprise, “He kissed my right hand to show his love and devotion for the Church in China. This gesture moved me deeply.”
Next day, March 14, at 5 pm, he recalled that Pope Francis celebrated his first mass as Successor of Peter in the Sistine Chapel together with all the cardinal electors, and in his homily, “he shared with us his reflections about the Church. He highlighted three actions that the Church must take: Journeying with the Lord under the light, actively building up the Church, proclaiming the Gospel and professing our faith. All these focus on the Crucified Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Hong Kong born cardinal revealed that on March 15, early morning, when he was on his way to the chapel in the Domus Sanctae Marthae he happened to be on the same elevator as Pope Francis. The Argentinean-born Pope then told him that the statue of Our Lady of Sheshan, now standing in his own room, reminded him of the Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier who arrived in China more than 460 years ago, . “He told me he never forgets to pray for Chinese Catholics”, the cardinal said.
During Mass that morning, he said, “Pope Francis pointed out in his homily that St. Ignatius of Loyola taught us not to forget the Suffering Jesus whenever we encounter difficulties in life; in this way, God will help us to enter into the mystery of Jesus’ resurrection.” Then, towards the end of his homily, Tong said, “unexpectedly, Pope Francis openly thanked me for the statue of Mary.”
Later that same day, when Pope Francis greeted all
the cardinals, one by one, in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic
Palace, Tong revealed, “I thanked him for remembering the Catholics in
On March 20, the day after the papal installation, Cardinal Tong bade farewell to Pope Francis before departing for Hong Kong, and told him, “On behalf of the Church in China, may I congratulate you again and thank you for your care and prayers for the Church in China.” At that point, he said, the Pope “kissed my hand again to show his devotion to the Church in China, and told him, “The Church in China is in my heart”.

Statement issued by the Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East for the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East of the Syriac Orthodox Church
On Monday, 22 April 2013, we were taken by surprise at the news that our brothers Bishop Paul (Yazigi) of Aleppo and Alexandretta and Bishop John (Ibrahim) Syriac Orthodox Bishop of Aleppo, had been kidnapped on their way back to Aleppo after accomplishing a humanitarian mission. We deeply regret what happened as we regret all similar acts targeting civilians, regardless of their belonging and therefore we address to the local and international communities the following declaration:
1- The Christians living here are an essential part of the land. They suffer the pain every person suffers; they work as messengers of peace to stop the perpetration of injustice against the oppressed. They follow the teaching of the Gospel that says love is at the basis of human relations. The official positions expressed by the spiritual leaders of the various churches highlight these beliefs and the mission fulfilled by the two kidnapped bishops is further proof of this orientation.
2- The Christians in this part of the East are deeply saddened by what their country is going through, namely the violence that is dividing the sons of the same country and endangering civilians who conduct their lives in peace. Kidnapping is a terrible expression of this violence and it is to be condemned without hesitation as it threatens the lives of unarmed individuals. We appeal to the kidnappers to respect the life of the two kidnapped brothers, and we call on everyone to put an end to all the acts that allow or create confessional and sectarian schisms among the sons of the same country.
3- We understand the preoccupation of the Christians following this event. We call on them to be patient, to adhere to the teachings of their faith, and to rely on God whose strength lies also in our weakness. We believe that to remain in our land and to do all that is possible to make it a land of love and coexistence, is a powerful tool in its defense. We are also aware that all citizens from all confessions are suffering the same pain due to the violence, and we pray that the Lord may strengthen them and console in their difficulties. Together with them we raise our voices and reject all sorts of violence that tears our country and makes our hearts bleed.
- 4 In this painful situation, we call on the world to work to end the Syrian crisis, so that it may go back to being a garden of love, security and peaceful coexistence. Political strife should not be resolved at the expense of the men and women of this region.
5- We also call all the churches in the world to stand fast in the face of what is happening and provide a witness to the power of love in this world. It is necessary to take steps that attest to the fact that they reject the violence to which the populations of these lands are being subjected to today.
6- We take the opportunity to call on our brothers of all Islamic confessions to work together, the ones with the others, to demonstrate that we refuse to consider man as a product that can be bought or sold, a shield to be used in war, a political or financial good of exchange.
7- We address the kidnappers and tell them that those whom they kidnapped are messengers of peace in this world, as witnessed by their religious and social missions. We appeal to them to deal with this painful episode peacefully as violence is useful only to the enemies of our nation.
Finally, we pray the Lord in these blessed feasts that this tragedy may end, that peace may prevail in the hearts of all, and so that country may enjoy the peace and prosperity it deserves.
Patriarch John X Yazigi Patriarch & Mar Ignatius Zakka I Iwas
“What a joy it is for me to announce this message: Christ is risen! I would like it to go out to every house and every family, especially where the suffering is greatest, in hospitals, in prisons …,” Pope Francis said in the Urbi et Orbi message which he pronounced at the end of the Easter mass he celebrated in St. Peter’s Square.
“Most of all, - Bergoglio said - I would like it to enter every heart, for it is there that God wants to sow this Good News: Jesus is risen, there is hope for you, you are no longer in the power of sin, of evil! Love has triumphed, mercy has been victorious!” “What does it mean that Jesus is risen? It means that the love of God is stronger than evil and death itself; it means that the love of God can transform our lives and let those desert places in our hearts bloom.”
“How many deserts, even today, - Francis continued - do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbour, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the Creator has given us and continues to give us. God’s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bones.” “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.”
Bergoglio then went on to bring his audience’s attention to some of the critical situations on the international scene. “Christ is our peace, and through him we implore peace for all the world,” he said. Peace for the Middle East, and particularly between Israelis and Palestinians, who struggle to find the road of agreement, that they may willingly and courageously resume negotiations to end a conflict that has lasted all too long.” The Pope then called for peace in Iraq, praying “that every act of violence may end, and above all for dear Syria, for its people torn by conflict and for the many refugees who await help and comfort. How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must there still be before a political solution to the crisis will be found?” Pope Francis also prayed for peace for Africa, which is “still the scene of violent conflicts. In Mali, may unity and stability be restored; in Nigeria, where attacks sadly continue, gravely threatening the lives of many innocent people, and where great numbers of persons, including children, are held hostage by terrorist groups. Peace in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in the Central African Republic, where many have been forced to leave their homes and continue to live in fear.”
He did not fail to mention the war in Korea either. “Peace in Asia, above all on the Korean peninsula: may disagreements be overcome and a renewed spirit of reconciliation grow. Peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain, wounded by the selfishness which threatens human life and the family, selfishness that continues in human trafficking, the most extensive form of slavery in this twenty-first century. Peace to the whole world, torn apart by violence linked to drug trafficking and by the iniquitous exploitation of natural resources! Peace to this our Earth! Made the risen Jesus bring comfort to the victims of natural disasters and make us responsible guardians of creation.”
At the end of the mass, Francis asked to be driven through the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square so he could embrace children and the sick. The Pope was expected to send out Easter wishes in 65 different languages but Francis decided not to.
Marcello Semeraro i direktor papinskih vila Saverio Petrillo.
(ba/VLM)
The Vatican Publishing House (Libreria Editrice Vaticana – LEV) has published the meditations for this evening’s Way of the Cross at the Colosseum, on its website. The texts for this year’s Good Friday Stations of the Cross procession were prepared by a group of young Lebanese Catholics, under the guidance of the Patriarch of the Maronites of Antioch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai.
“‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus answered this burning question, which arises in the innermost core of our being, by walking the way of the Cross,” these are some of the introductory words to the Stations of the Cross meditations, published in a book entitled Il dolore e la speranza nella Croce di Cristo (The pain and hope in Christ’s Cross). The texts that will be read out at the Colosseum tonight.
The call to follow God “is addressed to all, especially to the young and to those who are tried by division, wars or injustice and who fight to be signs of hope and builders of peace in the midst of their brethren,” the introduction reads.
The 1st Station, the young Lebanese Catholics pray that those who are in positions of power will govern in a just way. The 2nd meditation is about how man has always “thought he could take the place of God and determine for himself what is good and what is evil.” The 3rd text is a prayer to the Lord Jesus not to “allow human reason, which you created for yourself, to be satisfied with the partial truths of science and technology without seeking to pose the fundamental questions of the meaning of our existence.” The 4th spares a thought for families: may they be “oases of love,
peace and serenity, in the image of the Holy Family of Nazareth.” The 5th meditation is dedicated to suffering which, “accepted in faith, is transformed into a path of salvation.”
In the 6th meditation Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, remembering that Christ is present “in every person who suffers.” The 7th “considers many of our situations from which there seems to be no way of escape.” The 8th is about Jesus meeting the women of Jerusalem: Our world is full of afflicted mothers, of women whose dignity has been wounded abused by discrimination, injustice and suffering.” The 9th is about a Church that “is oppressed under the Cross of the divisions that distance Christians from one another.”
In the 10th meditation, Jesus is stripped of his clothes and is asked “Bestow…upon the children of the Eastern Churches - stripped by various difficulties, sometimes to the point of persecution, and weakened by emigration - the courage to remain in their countries to proclaim the Good News.” In the 11th Jesus is nailed to the Cross and the prayer reads: O Jesus, we pray to you for all those young people who are overcome by hopelessness, for young people who are the victims of drugs, of sects and of perversions. Free them from their enslavement.” In the 12th meditation, the young Lebanese pray “that all those who promote abortion may become aware that love can only be a source of life.” In the 13th, they pray “for the victims of the wars and of the violence” and in the 14th, when Jesus is laid in the tomb, the prayers conclude: “We have received the freedom of the children of God, so that we will not return to slavery; life has been given to us in abundance, so that we will no longer be satisfied with a life lacking beauty and meaning.”
Orthodox Christians appear in St. Peter’s
Bergoglio and Bartholomew I
It was the first time since 1054, that the Patriarch of Constantinople attended a Pope’s inauguration
It’s the challenge that could make his name immortal and it’s the wound he has set out to heal: Francis’ dream is to end the schism that for a thousand years has divided the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. “If he succeeds, he will go down in history as the greatest pope that ever was,” say members of the Curia.
“Bergoglio was an ordinary for followers of the Orthodox rite in Argentina” and even when he was still in his own country he had excellent relations with his “separated brethren”, explains Cardinal Achille Silvestrini, a former foreign minister and Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches. Therefore “he is familiar with this tradition and respects it,” a tradition that also includes married priests. Yesterday, as well as keeping kneeling stools, the new pope handed out hosts dipped in wine at Communion, as is usual in Eastern rites.
This sends out an important message: promising continuity with Ratzinger’s liturgical reforms while paying attention to the values of the Eastern churches which could enrich Western Catholicism, in danger of stagnation, as the council of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) also warns. For the first time since 1054, the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church and Patriarch of Constantinople attended the inauguration of the Pope (also Bishop of Rome) in St. Peter’s Square. Ecumenical diplomacy sprang into action as soon as the Argentine cardinal was elected. Bartholomew I is based in Istanbul (what was Constantinople in ancient times).
He is considered to be the “first among equals” of the 14 Eastern patriarchs and a guiding light for the entire Orthodox community. He has highlighted the importance of bringing all churches closer together with the aim of reuniting them, churches that represent 1.5 billion believers the world over. Bartholomew told the new pontiff: “[We wish for] the continuation of our journey towards reconciliation and consolidation of the dialogue for the unity of our Sister Churches.” Then he commented: “This Pope is a good shepherd. He has shown a real closeness to the people right from the start. I was really impressed. We're meeting in private tomorrow and I intend to invite him to Istanbul.”
There are also encouraging signals coming from Russia. Metropolitan Hilarion, the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external relations, recognises that when Bergoglio was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he established “good relations built on trust with the Orthodox community.” Francis is counting on the good offices of Bishop John, the head of the Orthodox Church outside Russia and based in Buenos Aires.
Every year Bergoglio has attended Christmas mass in the Orthodox church of the Argentine capital. He also has members of the Greek Catholic clergy “in his sights”, whose leader in Ukraine (Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk) became a friend of Francis’ during his two years of service in Buenos Aires (2009-2011). Right from the time of his studies in the seminary, Bergoglio had built ecumenical relationships through his teacher, the Salesian Ukrainian priest Fr. Stepan Czmil, sent by the Vatican ministry for Eastern churches to work among his countrymen in Argentina. In September 2008 the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church began his beatification process.
In short, Bergoglio could not have had a better “ferryman” steering him towards the Orthodox world and his election revives the dialogue concerning a “communion” between Christians as invoked by the Second Vatican Council. Few in the Catholic Church’s hierarchy know the traditions, culture and liturgy of their “separated brethren” as well as Bergoglio. The Community of Sant’Egidio is also working behind the scenes and – through Conclave members Sepe and Dziwisz and the Vatican’s minister for the family, Vincenzo Paglia – has actively supported Bergoglio and is now providing him with expertise, experience and international relations.
Another collaborator of Francis’ is the Catholic Archbishop of the Mother of God in Moscow, Paolo Pezzi. Moscow’s Patriarchate is at the centre of a series of scandals surrounding the luxurious, privileged lifestyles of its clergy. Pope Francis has sparked a desire for the reform of their own church among Orthodox believers.
Ethiopia: Matthias is elected new Patriarch of the Orthodox Church
The newly elected patriarch Mathias
As Catholic faithful say goodbye to their pope, Ethiopia's 50 million-strong Orthodox Church prepares to welcome its new 71-year old patriarch
As the Pope goes, a new Patriarch arrives. Completely by chance, as Catholics around the world bid farewell to Benedict XVI today, Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church elected its new patriarch, the 71 year old abune, Matthias, who was previously Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem. Matthias succeeds Abune Paulos who led this ancient Eastern Church - which currently has 50 million members – from 1991 until his death last August. Abune Matthias’ enthronement is expected to take place this Sunday in Addis Abeba.
The Orthodox Church of Ethiopia is an ancient Christian community with a tradition that dates back to the age of the apostles. The most famous element of its long history are the cave churches of Lalibela, on the plateau known as the Ethiopian Jerusalem, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Despite this century-old tradition, Matthias will only be Ethiopia’s sixth patriarch: until just over fifty years ago, Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church had an identity and a liturgy of its own (the ge’ez, forefather of today’s Amharic liturgy) but was also united with the Coptic Patriarchate in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1959, Coptic pope, Cyril VI recognised it as an autocephalous Church, crowning Archbishop Basilios as its first patriarch. But in little more than fifty years, the Church has been through some quite tough times: Dictator Mengistu put Theophilus, Basilios’ first successor in prison in 1976 and in 1979the patriarch was killed. The Ethiopian dictator appointed two successors who were not recognised by the other Churches. It was only in 1991 – when Mengistu’s dictatorship fell –that the hierarchy of the Ethiopian Church was restored with the election of Patriarch Paulos.
It is worth adding that the Mengistu’s regime forced the new patriarch, Matthias, to flee from Ethiopia. The patriarch has lived away from Addis Abeba for more than thirty years. Interestingly, his title (Archbishop of Jerusalem) is not coincidental: Ethiopian Christianity has maintained strong ties with what all Christians see as the mother Church. Its clergy lives in a monastery near the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The strict rules of the community’s status quo make it possible for them to celebrate their rites in the very place where Jesus died and was resurrected.
Otisak Isusova lica na Torinskom platnu
Autor: Portal Jutarnji.hr
DEUS CARITAS EST
Papal Resignation:Metropolitan of Europe’s response
To the Holy Father, Patriarch of the Western Church, Primate of Italy, Bishop of Rome, Successor to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, our most holy and apostolic lord, Benedict, the sixteenth of that name, Jerome Lloyd, OSJV, Metropolitan Archbishop of the old Roman Catholic Church of the Latin Rite, Diocesan Ordinary of Great Britain, and a sinner, sends the greatest greeting.
Together with all our clergy and faithful lay people, we the bishops of the Old Roman Catholic Church of the Latin Rite in Europe, write to you, showing you no small affection, and promising to pray for you who are about to retire from the See of St. Peter.
Truly and intensely all we bishops of the same Church had hoped to seek the apostolic benediction from you and in the spirit of true Christian charity to begin the dialogue by which all the more speedily we might heal the wounds by which our churches are even now divided. It pains and troubles us that we will not be able to engage with you, called by a great many “the Pontiff who would restore Christendom,” but we truly hope to establish such a dialogue with your successor.
With every part of our being, we earnestly desire to inform you that after we had been cast off by your predecessor, Pius IX in the year 1853, we never ceased to offer holy Mass “together with” the one who held the pontificate. Indeed, that we might retain the name of the Roman Pontiff in the Canon of the Mass, our predecessor, Archbishop Arnold Harris Matthew, took care to establish our Church sui iuris from the See of Utrecht on December 29, 1910. Consider it an established fact that all of our Masses will be offered in this way for you until you retire from the pontificate.
Although we have sufferred much through human weakness and machinations so that that doctrine handed down to us from the Fathers might be preserved and perpetuated, for which thing our Church was established; nevertheless, we have always considered the Holy Father in Rome as our head. Because we mourn with you that the Church in Europe is dying, that the Faith is withering, that “the Charity of many is growing cold,” (Matt 24:12) you will always serve for us as an example of godliness and apostolic zeal whereby we, all the more faithfully, with all our energies and powers, may earnestly strive to uproot the errors of heretical depravity and to announce to all afresh the Gospel, “the power of God unto salvation for all that believe,” (Rom 1:16) by which alone we can become heirs of the kingdom of heaven and “coheirs with Christ.” (Rom 8:16)
Although we will miss how rightly, accurately, and correctly, at “the urging of the love of Christ,” (II Cor 5:14) you diagnose the ills of this fallen world, sliding more day by day to ruin; nevertheless, we shall keep close to our hearts that “faith, hope, and charity,” (I Cor 13:13) which you so expertly have ever taught the universal Church by word and example, you the Vicar of Christ.
Holy Father, be mindful of our prayers offered on your behalf, and please “remember us at the altar of the Lord, wherever you happen to be.” (Cf. Confess. August. 9.11.27) May you increase, we pray, in the knowledge and love of God “for length of days,” (Ps 22:6) until you “possess the kingdom prepared for you from before the foundation of the world” (Matt 25:34) and “receive the crown of glory that passes not away” (I Pet 5:4).
Pray for us Holy Father.
“Lefebvrians are suspended a divinis: they can’t celebrate mass in the Catholic Church”
The Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg, Charles Morerod
The Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg, Charles Morerod, has signed a decree forbidding SSPX priests to use chapels in his diocese
The stance he has taken is significant and indicative: the Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg Charles Morerod – also a Dominican theologian, Rector of Angelicum, Secretary of the International Theological Commission and member of the delegation representing the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Church’s talks with the Society of St. Pius X (SSXP) – has published a decree forbidding Lefebvrian priests to celebrate mass in churches and chapels in his diocese. He also stressed that the Fraternity’s priests are suspended “a divinis”.
The document which was signed last 20 January regards “the admission of other religions, denominations or religious groups, such as the SSXP and groups of “independent theologians”, to Roman Catholic churches and chapels.” In the document, Mgr. Morerod, a prelate whom Benedict XVI knows well, explains that if non Christian religious communities ask to use a Catholic church the answer will be no. In as far as Christian communities and denominations go, on the other hand, the bishops said that based on the indications of the Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism of 1993, “permission for placing churches and chapels at the disposal of communities of other Christian confessions may be granted for reasons of pastoral need. If the aforementioned pastoral need presents itself, Catholic churches and chapels can only be placed at the disposal of Catholic-Christian, Evangelical-Reformed, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Anglican communities.”
According to the decree, SSPX priests do not fall into these categories. Morerod dedicates three brief paragraphs to the Lefebvrians, recalling, above all, that “the excommunication declared regarding the bishops of the Society on June 30, 1988, was lifted by a decree of the Congregation for Bishops, of January 21, 2009.” The document then quotes a letter dated 10 March 2009 and sent to Benedict XVI to bishops across the world in the aftermath of the Williamson scandal: "The fact that the Society of Saint Pius X does not possess a canonical status in the Church is not, in the end, based on disciplinary but on doctrinal reasons. As long as the Society does not have a canonical status in the Church, its ministers do not exercise legitimate ministries in the Church" [suspensio a divinis]. Due to the aforementioned reasons, - the decree goes on to say - it is forbidden to the priests of the Society of Saint Pius X to use the Catholic churches and chapels for all priestly service, in particular for the dispensation of the sacraments.”
The Morerod Decree Charles Morerod
On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Friday 14th September, His Excellency Monsignor Martin Charlesworth visited the Shrine Church of St Joseph at Medjugorje to receive into the Province of Europe the Superior and Community of the Cistercians of St Joseph led by Fra. Andrijā-Bonifacije Škulić O.Cist.SJ. The Community had been in preliminary dialogue with His Grace Archbishop Douglas Lewins of the ORCC/GB and it was felt appropriate for the Community to be received into the ORCCE. Msgr Charlesworth and Fra. Škulić O.Cist.SJ spent the entire day in prayer and conversation before Fra. Škulić’s oath of Canonical Obedience was received by Monsignor on behalf of theMetropolitan Archbishop before the Blessed Sacrament in the Shrine Church.
On Wednesday 19th September, His Excellency Monsignor +Széles Tamás of the Old Catholic Mission in Hungary, as an act of fraternal charity having received Letters Dimissorial from the Metropolitan Archbishop and having graciously acceded to His Grace’s request, ordained Fra. Škulić O.Cist.SJ as a Deacon on the Metropolitan’s behalf in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Budapest. Msgr Charlesworth witnessed the Ordination and celebrated the Mass of Ember. Fra. Andrew-Boniface had served in the Police in Croatia as a martial arts / defensive instructor; he is a martial arts expert. Fra. Škulić was in Germany training and teaching when he joined the Pallotineswith whom he received his formation and academic qualifications in theology and philosophy. When the war of independence broke out he was recalled to Croatia. After the war he started work in sales, representing Chimay Trappist beer and an energy drink and living a semi-monastic life.
Later, Fra. Andrew-Boniface was joined by the Community’s other professed brother, Fra. John and Fra. Peter and together they acquired a former monastery, a shell after the war and have embarked on a great project of rebuilding. It is in Zadar, north of Split and south of Zagreb, a beautiful and popular coastal resort. Their vision is to eventually create a mixed religious community of monks, nuns, and oblate families dedicated to the charism of a Benedictine inspired life. The rebuilding has progressed slowly but the brothers hope to be able to begin permanent residency by April next year. Already they have a growing number of oblates and postulants and a regular worshiping community forming around the monastery church. They hope eventually to be able to offer holiday accommodation for clergy and families too, as well as a conference and retreat centre.
